Alice Munro is one of the famous Canadian writers and is renowned above all for the astonishing subtlety of her short stories. Alice Munro''''''''s first collection of short stories, Dance of the Happy Shades (1968), was highly acclaimed and won that year''''''''''''''''s Governor General''''''''s Award, Canada''''''''s highest literary prize. This success was followed by Lives of Girls and Women in 1971, a collection of interlinked stories that was published as a novel. In 1978, Alice Munro''''''''''''''''s collection of stories, Who Do You Think You Are? was published. This book earned Munro the Governor General''''''''s Award for a second time. In October, 2013, she won the Nobel Literature Prize and in its prize announcement, Swedish Academy called her #8220;master of contemporary hort stories#8221;. Munro is good at portraying common people in ordinary life. Though Munro doesn#8217;t admit that she is a feminist writer, she always describes common woman#8217;s life and experience with her keen insight and incredible intelligence. Munro likes to capture every vivid moment of woman#8217;s life and complicated psychological activities of woman. Runaway is her latest collection of short stories, which won the Giller Prize in Canada after it was published.

This thesis is intended to give an analysis of Runaway from the perspective of Bildungsroman. The first chapter is a brief summarization of the development and the basic features of Bildungsroman. This chapter constructs a theoretical framework for the following study. #8220;Initiation#8221;, as a common cultural phenomenon and an important experience of human beings, is one of the most important research objects of literature, especially of the novels. The Bildungsroman originated in Germany, and is regarded as the most important contribution of Germany to the novel genre. The Bildungsroman underwent flourishment in England and became prosperous in America. After more than two hundred years of evolution, Bildungsroman as a genre gradually became mature. The second chapter discusses the unique features of the novel, including the gothic elements, the androgyny of the protagonist and the peculiar metaphors and symbols. The third Chapter from the perspective of feminism, this thesis analyzes the effect of male characters in Alice Munro#8223;s Runaway on the process of female consciousness growth from early phase to establishment, interpreting the story from the perspective of the efforts that female makes for self-improvement. The conclusion part summarizes the basic features of Bildungsroman the novel reflects, and the uniqueness of the novel. Runaway not only does some contribution to the development of Bildungsroman, but also reflects the loneliness and alienation of modern people, which is still worth contemplation of people today.

Women always as a leading role, reflect on their living conditions by getting women''''''''''''''''s life fragments, and explore their rich inner world. On Barbara Godard#8217;s theory, Heirs of the Living Body: Alice Munro and the Question of a Female Aesthetic (1984), 'the lives of Girls and Women' as an example discussed the Female subjectivity and Female desire and the question of women writers and literary convention, was the beginning of the study of Munro#8217;s feminism. Secondly, some scholars have studied the relationship of Munro#8217;s life of regional background and the novel. Researchers agreed that distinct regional character is one of Munro#8217;s works features. Brandon Conron pointed out in theory of Munro''''''''s Wonderland (1978) that novel catch the Ontario''''''''s color of town in rural. Thirdly, Munro''''''''s novels mostly with autobiographical, by painting town of residents'''''''''''''''' daily life, truly characterized a real life picture of ordinary people especially ordinary women in the early 20th century Canadian remote town. Although Monroe already famous in the world literary works, but because of she was mainly writing short stories and domestic scholars attention to it a little, so is short of translation studies. 14 sets of her works, only a collection of short stories Runaway(2004) in 2009 the year she won the Man Booker International Prize and during the same year July translated by li wenjun and Beijing October wenyi pressed, this is the first time that Munro''''''''s works in the Chinese translation version. 2000 years ago, in addition to scattered some promotional articles, Munro''''''''''''''''s domestic literature research is almost blank. Throughout the study of Munro''''''''s in domestic literary critics, criticism perspective focused on the following two aspects: 1.
