The Life of Addison is a general record of the life and works of Joseph Addison,Johnson put forward many unique views and made comments with his own criticalstandard. By analyzing the favoritism shown in the book, the paper aims to explainthe reasons why Johnson seemed to show favoritism in the book and let peopleknow more about Johnson’s writing style.

The essay focuses on the favoritismreflected in the book and is divided into two parts. Chapter one is mainlyabout the details of the favoritism shown in the book, it includes three parts:the favoritism to Addison’s works, both his drama and essay, the favoritism toAddison’s political career, and the favoritism to Addison’s lifestyle. The second reason is related to hiscareer, mainly focuses on his political career. And the last reason isconnected with his lifestyle.

In recent years,great achievements have been made by scholars both at home and abroad in thestudies of Samuel Johnson as well as his works. Many of the papers that relate to The Lives of the Poets focuson its writing style and great significance in history. They are mainlyconcerned with Johnson’s criticism and personal experience, and most of themare the overall assessment of the book rather than specific studies in one ofthe biographies.

Pat Rogers’s research focused on Johnson’sworks, he did a combined analysis of Johnson''s Lives of the Poets andthe Biographic Dictionaries. There are other people who analyze the bookfrom different aspects. For instance, Mark W. Booth analyzed the proportion andvalue in Johnson''s Lives of the Poets, and he gave his view.
