1. 研究目的与意义
Politeness is not only a cultural phenomenon, but also a linguistic phenomenon. Polite language has a deep relationship with history, values, and thinking patterns. Different cultural differences lead to different politeness principles; and this might cause communication misunderstanding. Therefore, a contrastive study of politeness principle between Western and Chinese culture is very necessary to avoid pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication and to improve English learners' communicative ability.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
By contrast to politeness principle in western countries, we can find out the differences between western and Chinese culture, and analyze its causes and significance.The whole study concentrates on the similarities and differences in the application of politeness principle between western and Chinese culture. The difficulty lies in the analysis of western and Chinese cultural differences and conflicts. This essay includes five parts. Chapter one is an introduction to the significance and organization of the thesis. Chapter two is the definition of politeness and its principle. Chapter three describes the application of politeness principles under western and Chinese culture, and their similarities and differences. Chapter four explains reasons for similarities and differences in application of Politeness Principle between western and Chinese culture. Chapter five sums up the major findings of the study.
3. 国内外研究现状
According to many foreign scholars'''' study and discussions, we can find that under different cultural backgrounds, although they have common points, there are more differences. They regard the politeness principles as 'face work' . H. P. Grice(1960) proposed the principle of co-verbal communication,but people are not necessarily abide by these principles in communication,and sometimes they will intentionally violate these principles. G. N. Leech (1983) put the pragmatic principles into two categories-'interpersonal rhetoric' and 'rhetoric discourse', and found the relationship between politeness principle and the principle of cooperation and further promote the development of pragmatics. In Western Politeness Principle Comparison Analysis (Luo, 2008), LuoHui focused on the principles of politeness in the Western and Chinese, especially for the politeness principle of Leech. Yang Liping(1996) analyzed the principles of politeness and honorifics praised language and language in humility, salutation, language differences and other aspects of social activities, which will help to achieve a positive and effective cross-cultural communication. In A Comparison of Politeness Principle between English and Chinese in Cross-cultural Communication (Qiao, 2007), Qiao Lijuan has listed English and Chinese culture in greeting, salutation and treat humble language differences , and proposed that we should respect different cultural traditions and values. Guo Wei (2005: 86)thought that 'words like persons': according to a person#8217;s words, intonation and tone, we can infer his upbringing, educational level, and even his social status and occupation.
From the perspective of pragmatics and discourse rhetoric, western and Chinese scholars get the different politeness principles in verbal communication. Politeness has both cultural universality and cultural differences; therefore, it has different understanding of politeness principle under the effect of different cultures. Although politeness principles that have put forward by Chinese and western scholars belong to the different category of cultures, they are both the framework of restricting speech acts and the generalization of politeness to human speech acts.
