The significance ofthis thesis can be understood in three aspects.

First, by analyzingthe symbolic meanings of the garden in The Secret Garden from the perspectiveof eco-criticism, this thesis shows the natural ecology the garden symbolizes,and reveals the interactive and inseparable relationship between human andnature. It emphasizes this point to people, and calls on people to pay attentionto nature, love nature and respect nature.

Second, by analyzingthe symbolic meanings of the garden from the perspective of psychoanalysis,this thesis explores the spiritual activities of some characters, and thenshows that the garden represents some specific characters. It reveals thefunction of sustenance of emotion and memory possessed by the garden. Inaddition, through the principle of child-orientation and the theory ofpersonality structure, it discusses different characters including both adultsand children, and connects them with the garden, and analyzes what the gardensymbolizes, so as to reveal more of the garden’s hidden meanings.

Research contents

This thesis mainlystudies the symbolic meanings of the garden in The Secret Garden, so as toexplore the importance of natural ecology and the great significance ofchildren''s literature. It analyzes the profound significance of the garden fromthree aspects, namely nature, characters and spirit. It uses the theories of eco-criticism,psychoanalysis, the principle of child-orientation and childlike innocence toprovide theoretical support for the above three aspects in an in-depth andorderly manner. It involves many aspects, such as natural ecology, therelationship between human and nature, the function of sustenance of emotionand memory, adults and children.

At present, the research status in this field is mainly the research onnature and spirit of the garden by British, American and domestic scholars. Thefocus is to explore the ecological enlightenment symbolized by the garden, therelationship between human and nature, the characters symbolized by the gardenand spiritual magic of the garden. Through the analysis of the characters andplots in the original work, this thesis explores the different effects of thegarden on different characters in the original work, or what the gardenrepresents.
