1. 研究目的与意义
People of a certain culture have a culture-peculiar way of conceiving the world, observing things and thinking about questions. Every culture has its individual thought patterns. In terms of geography and culture, the world can be divided into the Orient and Occident. China is a representative of the Orient while English-speaking nations are representatives of the Occident. Because of the different philosophies, modes of production, way of life, they have different thought patterns.
Chinese prefer synthetic, imagery, subjective, cyclical and group-oriented thinking thoughts, etc., while westerners prefer analytic, abstract, objective, linear and ego-centric thinking modes. These differences interfere with Chinese learner#8217;s English writing and lack of such knowledge is a cause of Chinese English learners#8217; frustration in English writing.
This paper finds out the influence of native language on the English writing and analyzes the native language transfer in the writing. Therefore, this study will be a significant endeavor in avoiding using the mother tongue thinking in English writing and improving the language sensitivity and the English writing level.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Through analyzing the differences between Chinese and Western Thought Patterns, the topic itself aims to approach the influence caused on selection of words, syntactic structure, article structure and writing style on English writing and then gives some advice to improve writing skills of Chinese students.
In this essay, the author will compare English thinking modes and Chinese thinking modes to demonstrate the different ways of thinking modes, carry out a scientific analysis about interfering effect of Chinese native language on English writing discourse. The difficulty lies in the connection between the thought patterns and the characteristics of the way of expressions and only by dealing with the difficulty clearly can readers of this article understand these differences deeply and then to write some authentic writings.
This essay consists of six parts. Chapter one is introduction.Chapter two is about literature review. Chapter two keeps an eye on three major differences between Chinese and Western thought patterns on the basis of different cultural backgrounds which includes cyclical thought and linear thought, subjective thought and objective thought and also image thought and abstract thought. Chapter three analyzes in detail the influence caused by such differences on English writing in terms of words, sentence, article and style. Chapter four gives English learners some effective suggestions. They can help them to get rid of the interference of their mother tongue. And finally chapter five sums up differences in ways of expression and hopes that readers can improve their writing skills.
3. 国内外研究现状
The relationship between language and culture has been a focus of attention from a variety of perspectives for many years. One of the best-known statements is the Sapir-Whorf#8217;s hypothesis which holds that human beings don#8217;t live in the objective world in isolation, but are very much at the mercy of the particular language, while the real world is, to a large extent, unconsciously built up on the language habits of the group. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis consists of two parts, i.e. linguistic determinism and linguistic relativity. Whorf proposed first that all higher levels of thinking are dependent on language, that is, language determines thought which is the notion of linguistic determinism. Because languages differ in many ways, Whorf also believed that speakers of different languages perceive and experience the world differently which is related to their linguistic background, hence the notion of linguistic relativism, as he stated:
...The background linguistic system ... of each language is not merely a reproducing instrument for voicing ideas but rather is itself the shaper of ideas, the program and guide for the individual#8217;s mental activity, for his analysis of impressions, for his synthesis of his mental stock in trade. Formulation of ideas is not an independent process, strictly rational in the old sense, but is part of a particular grammar, and differs, from slightly to greatly, between different grammars. We dissect nature along lines laid down by our native languages. The categories and types that we isolate from the world of phenomena we do not find there because they stare every observer in the face; on the contrary, the world is presented in a kaleidoscopic flux of impressions which has to be organized by our minds -- and this means largely by the linguistic systems in our minds. We cut nature up, organize it into concepts, and ascribe significances as we do, largely because we are parties to an agreement to organize it in this way -- an agreement that holds throughout our speech community and is codified in the patterns of our language. The agreement is, of course, an implicit and unstated one, but its terms are absolutely obligatory; we cannot talk at all except by subscribing to the organization and classification of data which the agreement decrees.... (whorf,1940)
In 1966, Kaplan, developing and expanding the Whorf#8217;s view that each language reflects a worldview on its users, put forward that not only language spoken but logical and rhetoric are cultural specific and therefore proposed contrastive rhetoric which is the study of how a person''s first language and culture influence his or her writing in a second language. Instead of studying syntactic issues in writing, contrastive rhetoric go ahead to compare discourse structures across cultures and genres. It has dealt with issues such as organization of information in written essays conducted by ESL or EFL learners with a variety of language and disciplinary backgrounds.
